The civil war in Sudan, ignited in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has spiraled into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. The conflict has killed tens of thousands, displaced over 12 million people—with more than 8 million displaced internally and nearly 4 million fleeing abroad. Our expertise was requested when a high dignitary was critically wounded and needed immediate transport. It was a major challenge to say the least.
No local medical facility was able to provide the necessary surgery. Therefore the patient needed to be transported to Morocco within the next 48hrs.
Upon review of the medical record and severe medical condition, the doctor did not clear the patient to fly at high altitude, triggering a whole new set of challenges.
Upon receipt of the request by phone, the first we thing we requested was the medical report for assessment by a doctor. While the review was taking place, we immediately began sourcing the aircraft. We are able to find a suitable and medically equipped plane within a record-breaking 30 minutes.
Once we decided to accept the "Sea Level" flight mission, our attention immediately turned to our operations director to leverage all possible connections in the continent to gain low-altitude flight permits.
The entire turn around was done within 24 hours, and that was a major point of pride. That being said all efforts would've been for naught if the patient doesn't get immediate surgery upon arrival.
The surgery team was on standby upon arrival, with an ambulance waiting on the tarmac, and surgeons ready to go in the OR.
Despite the patient arriving in alarming condition, he was in the OR in the nick of time. thankfully, the patient survived, and remained under observation at the hospital for 3 weeks until fully stabilized.
Needless to say, relieved is an understatement. During the entire process, the patient's family needed us to remain in very close and permanent contact, as they couldn't travel along with him due to security concerns.
